The following link is to a simple little spreadsheet that helps you determine what defenses you should build.

The Setup is pretty simple. All you change is the GREEN field. The top part is some random information that is just fun to know. I typed it all by hand and will be improving the features as I add to it.

<NOTE> Not sure if anyone other than me can edit the green field yet, so let me know please. The ratios are based upon an average rate that many Ogamers agree upon.

how do I edit something I already posted? Do I have access to edit my own posts?

I have a link to a copy of the original that I have allowed anyone to edit. This way everyone can use it and add things to it, but only the original will be the one I personally work on. Kinda like a group project, then the one I have is a backup in case someone screws up Razz

Are the calculations based on damage dealt, damage that can be received, the cost to construct defenses, or a little bit of all three?

Yes and no. As of now the results are 100% linear based upon proven strategies that work long run. Zero of the current top half is used to work into the bottom half. The top is just some fun info, and I will be changing that around to make for some editable fields to give back some cool info. Inputting sciences will be one of the fields so shields and attack values and armor values will be per-your-settings.

The draw-back to this shared version is each person who wishes to use it must change each field every time he/she wants to check something.

I'll be adding more and more to it, cus I'm doing it more for myself. I just felt that maybe someone else could enjoy it as well.

While that page is nice and all, it doesn't account for the enemy fleet. If I know what my enemies are likely to through at me, what is the best defense? For instance, on Capella, I regularly face fleets from 60-100 battle cruisers (worst thus far was 100 destroyers). How should I build my defenses then?

There is no best defense.. but really good turtles result of having a good mix.

The ratios i'm running on the spreadsheet are a mix that is good for overall. High amount of Fodder to keep big guns alive, and enough big guns to dish out serious pain on the enemy.

I'll add more fields to allow everyone to choose theire own ratios and stuff, so don't worry about that kind of thing.

Used an old outdated Spreadsheet as a base module and am in process of updating the formulas for current use. Also fixing a lot of mathematical errors and adding improvements. Will have a BETA release available soon!

Is it really worth building a lot of rockets? I had a ton in the beginning, but as they got destroyed I went to making light lasers my lowest defense. Currently, on my homeworld I have the following:

15 rockets
82 light lasers
73 heavy lasers
12 ion cannons
12 gauss canons

Still need one more level of plasma tech before I can build plasma turrets. I guess based upon the defense calculator I need to make a lot more light defense items.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

rockets are fodder food for attacks, the attacking fleet fires on rl's almost always 1st, if u do not have any they will fire on the bigger guns taking more of them out other than your rl's.

I have 535 RL's, 122 LL's on home planet, as fodder food only + all the others at diff.amounts.

They're cheap, and fodder to protect the rest of your def so I'd say it's worth it.

I build rocket launchers when I don't have any crystal left for other weapon types. They are just there to soak up damage while the bigger guns dish out the pain. If I have the crystal available, I biuld Light Lasers before Rockets, but I attempt to have even amounts or more rockets than light lasers. I don't build heavy lasers at all anymore, waste of res for the little gain in attack power.

You guys convinced me...I've started building up my rockets on all my planets...won't take long and I would assume metal is something most players are not hurting that much for, so the rockets shouldn't add that much of an enticement to my a debri in the eyes of our competition.

yep, thats why defenses are so important in this Uni, no Debri Field from them. Makes you a lot less enticing of a target.
