It stops when you want it to stop. But in reality, resources are the only thing that can and will slow the ever increasing and continuing research.

Technically, although nobody has reached it, it is generally accepted that 99 is the max, but I think Gameforge has actually said there isn't a hard limit.
That being said, there is a 'soft' one. Any tech will just take too long and cost too much to be researchable at some point, since the costs double each level (except Astro, that's 175% increase each time). The time scales with the cost, so yeah.....eventually you get techs that take YEARS to complete

ahhh thats why these high level guys raid .. free material to increase tech . such as shields set at 300% etc..
