when is it best to just give up on a planet? also best way to abondand it ?

There are only really two acceptable reasons to abandon a planet (although there is also a third reason, it is quite rare)-
-The planet has too little fields apun its colonization. (200+ is the generally-accepted minimum)
-The planet is a 'Grav colony', in other words a planet in the very first slot. They are too small to be viable in the late game
-The rare reason is that some people use 'mobile colonies', that is when they save a colony slot specifically for a colony that they abandon and re-colonize somewhere else freqently, usually close to a potential target to reduce fleet flight times
